Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas

Motion

Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas takes a satirical look at social and cultural issues from Cenac's unique perspective. The solution led me to come up with a design that evokes a sense of nostalgia by employing geometric simplicity and yet encapsulates all the complexities of the societal issues at hand by incorporating images of cityscapes and ephemera inscribed within each circle.

The face character leads the viewer through the title to create a narrative that presents an overview of the show. It takes a ride through the map of America, zooms into a single dot representing a city, and interacts with different images in each circle confronting each by using mattes to reveal notions of the cityscape. The journey ends with the face popping into the logo and blinking. The bright bold colors, textures, patterns, maps, and smooth transitions give this opening a retro flare that elicits the societal forces behind modern urban planning.
